Project

Biodiesel from Waste Vegetable Oil

Jan Kowal and I worked on a project that involved the creation of a business plan to develop and operate a biodiesel production facility utilizing waste vegetable oil as the primary feedstock. There are three main facets to this business model including the development of a steady supply of waste vegetable oil from local businesses, processing of the supply into ASTM D6571 certified biodiesel, and marketing the finished product to fleet buyers and petroleum distributors. The core component of this business model is the development of a secure, steady supply of waste vegetable oil from local restaurants and other producers by promoting an attractive value proposition that reduces their cost while promoting environmental and social responsibility. A number of processing technologies are available for converting the waste oil to biodiesel, and for our project we have based our calculations on purchasing and implementing a 4000 metric ton/year transesterification system. The main goal is to produce ASTM certified biodiesel and obtain BQ-9000 Certified Producer status to validate our product quality and improve our brand image. Our target market for selling our finished product is wholesale fuel distributors as an additive for blending and to fleet buyers in bulk sales.
