I advised undergraduate student teams in a capstone Management class as they created venture plans for four Sustainable Ventures: Navajo FlexCrete is an operating venture of the Navajo Nation that produces "green" building products from flyash that would normally be put in a landfill. The Rim Country OSB Plant is a prospective venture that would produce Oriented Strand Board products from small diameter wood, the harvesting of which will help restore Northern Arizona forests and forest communities to a healthy state. gSTIX, the Global Sustainable Technology Innovation Exchange, is a prospective web venture whose mission is to accelerate the rate of innovation of sustainable technologies by building a community of researchers, inventors, innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, suppliers and users. The Four Directions is an ASU education program whose mission is to enable Native Americans to practice Sustainable Entrepreneurship in a manner consistent with their cultures.
In addition to acting as a consultant to the teams, I edited the business plans and supplemented them with Strategy Maps. This project presents the results of the four business planning efforts, discusses the challenges associate with embedding Triple Bottom Line thinking in entrepreneurial teaching and makes observations on the utility of Strategy Maps in defining and visualizing a Triple Bottom Line.
